Dr. Nazir Brelvi, OD

Dr. Brelvi, a SUNY, New York graduate and an 18-year resident of Panther Valley has a busy private practice at the Wal-Mart in Mt. Olive. Apart from this primer on Cognitive Optometry, Nazir has authored several riveting science-based adventure books that explore early and pre-human evolution.

According to Dr. Brelvi, the frontiers of scientific discovery are defined as much by the tools available for clinical observation and monitoring as by conceptual innovation. Yesteryear Optometrists have historically studied the visual system in toto to understand the subtle nuances associated with a spectrum of learning disabilities.

The modern-day Optometric physicians, however, via the introduction of a new discipline of Cognitive Optometry in the Vision Sciences, will be empowered to precisely identify and map regions implicated in “normal” cognitive performance. This hi-tech clinical approach will help link diverse mental activities to specific modules or regions of the brain through computerized neuro-imaging methods like the PET and fMRI.

Dr. Brelvi envisions fellow clinicians to recognize the key role played by the visual system in the complex process of cognition, which gives rise to the gift of sentience in modern Homo sapiens.

Eventually, such perceptual “maps” can help diagnose specific aspects of autism or other neurological entities. This will enable various healthcare/social services to transition such patients into successful goal-oriented behaviors, allowing them to lead more productive and rewarding lives.

In this riveting third episode of the five-part Hominid series, Dr. Brelvi delves into the pre-verbal world of our early ancestors living 2.2 million years ago.

Zak and friends, along with Dr. Abu Baqr, an intrepid Arab paleontologist from Khartoum, explore the wild Sudd swamps of southeastern Sudan.

Over the span of ten action-packed days, the team explores the exotic tribal culture of the Masakin Tiwal dwelling today in the Nuba Mountains; clamber up the acrid slopes of Kinyeti, a dormant volcano inhabited by vicious baboons; uncover a trail of human-like footprints left behind by an ancestral human family; witness a violent encounter between two rival clans of Zimba Headhunters and navigate the turbid waters of a croc-infested swamp encircling a freshwater lake choked full of papyrus reeds.

Throughout the narrative, Dr. Brelvi flits back and forth between the daily hazards of hominid existence in the dim reaches of pre-history and the potentially fatal dangers lurking in the murky swamps of Lotagipi for Zak and his team as they blaze an intriguing trail through human anthropology.

Newsflash

Three years ago, Microsoft co-founder Paul G Allen put up $100 million to establish the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Its first project would be the Allen Brain Atlas, aimed at accelerating efforts to map where and when every gene in the mouse brain is active.

Last September the Institute unveiled the complete atlas, a 3D map of 21,000 genes resolved down to individual cells. Because mice and humans share up to 90 percent of the same genes, researchers hope that such a map will provide insights into the genetics of human brain development, functioning and disease, including Alzheimer’s, addiction and autism.
